Easy Popovers Recipe - How to Make Popovers
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups milk
4 large eggs at room temperature
1/4 cup butter plus additional for greasing pan
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
Non-stick cooking spray
The cooking Experience:
As always, I made it a priority to follow the directions precisely. I preheated my oven to 450 degrees and warmed the milk in the microwave. Once heated, I blended the milk with the room-temperature eggs until the mixture became frothy. Following the instructions, I then added flour, melted butter, salt, and pepper into the blender, pulsing the ingredients until they were well combined.
Next, I chopped the remaining butter into 12 pieces and thoroughly sprayed my muffin pan with non-stick cooking spray. I placed a piece of butter in the bottom of each muffin slot and put the pan in the oven for 5 minutes, as directed. In hindsight, I should have monitored the melted butter closely, as five minutes may have been too long for my oven—cooking times can vary significantly.
Once the five minutes were up, I poured the batter into the individual muffin slots and returned the pan to the oven for 20 minutes. I decided to add a twist by incorporating brie cheese into some of the popovers; the first three were without cheese, while the remaining nine included it. After 20 minutes, I reduced the oven temperature to 350 degrees, as per the instructions, and continued baking for another 15 minutes before removing them to cool for 10 minutes.
My concerns about overcooking were validated, as my popovers did burn slightly. However, they still tasted good, with a delightful custard center in the plain popovers. In contrast, the popovers with brie lacked the custard but the cheese complemented the flavors beautifully. Although the recipe called for chives, I chose not to add them. I believe these popovers would taste fantastic with chives, making them an excellent side dish for dinner.
