The Cooking Experience:

After a series of baking mishaps as of late, I decided I was definitely not going to attempt making donuts from scratch. Instead, I opted for a little experimentation. I had heard that adding Jello pudding to cake mixes could yield interesting results, so I thought I’d give it a try.

In the book Fallen Academy, Brielle's favorite Cloud Nine Donut is the bliss bomb which has a delightful cherry flavor. Inspired by this, I decided to create my own version with a cherry cheesecake twist. I combined yellow cake mix, cheesecake Jello mix, 1 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, and 3 large eggs in a large mixing bowl. I then poured the batter into a silicone donut pan and baked it at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

While the donuts were baking, I mixed vanilla icing with cherry Jello powder in a small container. Once the donuts had cooled, I coated the tops with the icing. I must admit my donuts turned out a bit uneven from top to bottom, so I plan to pour less batter into the pan next time because with the frosting, they now look like cupcakes.

Overall, my experiment with adding Jello mixes to the batter and frosting was a resounding success. The cherry Jello imparted a delightful cherry Jolly Rancher flavor to the icing, which paired beautifully with the mild cheesecake batter of the donuts. I found them utterly addictive! I’m glad I added the cheesecake flavoring, as the cherry alone would have been too overpowering.

Creating this new treat was a lot of fun, and it has sparked a desire in me to continue experimenting with flavors in the future.
