The Crafting Experience:

I had been seeing decoupage jars on Facebook for quite a while and looked forward to having an excuse to make one myself. When my latest read, Kingdom of Waves, featured relics containing spirits in blue bottles—and the heroine, Gin, carried the spirit of a warrior in hers—I knew I had to create a siren-inspired decoupage jar. I could not wait to get started.

In the book, each bottle had a different gemstone topper; Gin’s bottle featured a ruby. Since I could not replicate that detail perfectly, I chose a cork painted with Raspberry Flash color-shift paint to use as my bottle topper.

To begin, I needed a blue bottle, so I painted the entire surface with two coats of Glacier chalk paint, allowing 30 minutes of drying time between coats. I also painted the cork with two coats of Raspberry Flash color-shift paint to create a rich, saturated finish with plenty of shimmer.

Once the paint had set, I placed my siren sticker on the front of the bottle and coated the bottle with Mod Podge. After allowing it to set for an hour, I cut a length of vegan suede lace cord and tied it around the neck of the bottle. I added a charm to the suede cord for a little extra sparkle and a finishing touch.

The finished jar turned out exactly as I had hoped. I love my first attempt at decoupage, and I will definitely be doing it again in the future—hopefully on a chair for my work desk.
