WELCOME TO THE COVE N
Ice cream doesn't burn like acid, witches don't exist, and any hot angry guy that looks like he wants to kill you is best left alone. A day ago, all of that was true. Now... Let's just say I'm a little skeptical.
After what should've been a literal walk in the park turns into a murder scene, I'm taken by three sword-wielding lunatics and dropped off at Runic Magical Academy. The most prestigious school in the Coven.
If I didn't think bitchy witches, an annoying magical light, and getting my ass-kicked as I train to harness my powers were bad enough, there's something more sinister going on. Someone's hunting me.
There are secrets about my past that no one is willing to answer. But if I'm going to survive as a witch, then I need to know exactly why I ended up hidden away in the mortal world. Preferably before my soul ends up outside of my body.
A Witch in Blood is an engaging YA urban fantasy that I would definitely recommend. Cora, the main character, is darker than the typical heroine, but that makes her feel especially relatable to teens who have struggled to manage intense emotions and hormones. While I had a somewhat easier teenage experience than many, I still had my own "teen" moments—though my mom would probably admit she was lucky with me. Cora spent her entire childhood in foster care, relying only on herself to get by. When she discovers that she is a witch—and that she has a living aunt who serves as headmistress of an academy—she is taken there for her own protection and training. As the story unfolds, Cora tries to learn to trust her aunt and form friendships with the other witches at the school. Of course, there are mean girls who make Cora's life difficult, and it would not be a true romantasy without a love-triangle situation. However, Cora faces far more serious problems: her mother bound her magic, and someone is hunting her. Unable to protect herself while her powers remain sealed, Cora must uncover the truth and decide who she can trust as she works to undo the spell placed on her magic. The ending delivers several twists that genuinely surprised me. I am still recovering from one major revelation that, in hindsight, I may have been able to see coming—but only if I had recognized all the clues woven throughout the story. All I know is that I am desperate to get my hands on the next installment and find out what awaits Cora and her friends as they uncover even more truths about Cora's parents and their past.
