Thirteen-year-old Audie just wanted to escape homeschool...

She didn't expect to sprout gold wings and crash into a celestial war. Audie must unlock the powers she never asked for - or risk losing everyone she loves. The Angel Archives is a heart-pounding, fantasy adventure full of fierce friendships, high-flying battles, and one girl's journey to discover who, or what, she really is.

Angels of Ashes is an enchanting novel that I highly recommend for middle schoolers and older readers. I thoroughly enjoyed its whimsical twist on what life would be like if angels had children, how young angels in training might be nurtured, and what a fantastical version of Heaven could look like with mythical creatures roaming its realms.

One of the cleverest choices was to introduce a human boy as the narrative lens, allowing us to experience the story through his perspective rather than that of an angel. At the heart of this tale is the young heroine, Audie, who grows up on Earth unaware of her true identity as a powerful phoenix angel. Once she reaches Heaven, she must keep her identity a secret in order to fulfill her destiny of preventing an impending celestial war.

The story beautifully follows Audie’s journey of self-discovery as she learns about her dormant powers while training with her new friends, fellow angels in training. Along the way, she encounters astonishing mythical creatures she never knew existed, forming bonds with them that enrich her experience.

As secrets unravel, new relationships blossom while others face turmoil. The cliffhangers at the end of the book leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. It’s not often that I find a series I’m excited to share with my son, but this one stands out as a delightful choice for bedtime reading. I wholeheartedly recommend this series for anyone looking for a fun and engaging read with their kids.
