Disclosure: This book contains bad language and sexual content.

In the Shadows of the human world, a secret society of demon hunters fights to keep humanity from the supernatural forces that threaten to tear it apart.

But for Max Bently, a rookie hunter struggling to find her place amongst her kind, the biggest threat might just be the four brooding members of an elite team of hunters-- all of whom seem to have taken a special interest in her.

She quickly discovers that their past is as dark and complicated as her own-- and she's determined to uncover their secrets if it's the last thing that she does. As she is drawn deeper into the mysterious world of demon hunting, she finds herself torn between her duty to her people and her growing attraction to her team.

It's more than her heart on the line. It's the very fabric of our world.

This tale unfolds around our young heroine, a brave protector who was abandoned at birth and later adopted by the cantankerous but kind-hearted Cyrus. Beneath his gruff exterior, Cyrus possessed a heart of gold and dedicated himself to raising her. Alongside her, he welcomed another orphaned protector, Ro, who quickly became like a sibling. Together, the three of them forged an unconventional family, living in the serene isolation of the mountains for 18 years. This solitude drew them closer, creating bonds that would endure the test of time.

As they navigated life in the wilderness, they trained together daily, with Cyrus choosing to homeschool the children rather than sending them to the nearby town or a protector's academy. He believed in the importance of solitude, determined to shield his young wards from the outside world, including the very realm they were destined to inhabit—the world of protectors.

One fateful day, two significant events unfolded. First, Cyrus received an important-looking letter from the Protector's Academy in Montana. Second, Max and Ro had their first encounter with a werewolf. The situation could have ended in disaster if not for the mysterious black dog that came to Max's aid. In light of these events, Cyrus swiftly decided to leave the mountains and take Max and Ro to the academy, where they could continue their training alongside fellow protectors.

Max quickly feels the urge to prove herself to her fellow protectors. She is determined to demonstrate that being female does not diminish her strength or fighting abilities compared to her male counterparts at the academy. Having endured solitude throughout her life, she struggles to fit in socially with some of her peers. However, others find her awkwardness refreshing and charming. In no time, Max manages to forge strong friendships while also attracting a few formidable rivals.

Initially, Max struggled to understand why Cyrus would keep her and Ro away from the academy. However, it wasn't long before she uncovered the reasons behind it. The Protectors uphold traditions and secrets that Max finds difficult to grasp. Compounding her confusion, there seems to be something unusual about her that no one seems willing or able to explain. To make matters more complicated, an elite team of Protectors has taken a peculiar interest in her. Can she trust them, or should she be wary of their true intentions?

I must admit this author has done an amazing job of creating questions without providing any answers in her book. The suspense is palpable, and as I turned each page, I found myself more and more invested in the characters and their journeys. The book ends with a cliffhanger and leaves so many unresolved matters that I cannot help but jump onto Amazon to buy the next book in the series. The way the author weaves intricate plots and develops compelling characters keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eager for more. If you enjoy thrilling narratives that challenge your mind and leave you wanting more, this series is definitely worth diving into!
